I’m not sure what day we’re on since the Stay-At-Home order has been put in place, but here we are. I don’t know about you, but my iPhone likes to send me notifications all about how much my phone usage has increased week over week. Yes, phone. I know. Obvy.
My phone’s not wrong. (how it could it be anyway?) I’ve been refreshing all my apps pretty frequently while mindlessly watching TV or taking a break at work. What’s one thing I haven’t been refreshing? Instagram Lives.
Y’all already know. Once it hits 9am PT, 12pm PT, 5pm PT, 7pm PT, or literally any peak hours, your IG Story feed is HIT with Instagram Lives. At first, it was great! I hit up John Legend’s and even my girl Puno. But then it got super overwhelming when every other swipe was a workout video.
Am I right? Like OK, obviously no disrespect. DO YOUR THING. I think I’m more like, “Hey, @Instagram. Can you please give me the option to not have IG Lives front and center of my feed?” Some mornings could be an endless scroll or notifications of all these brands and accounts going live.
On the one hand, it’s exciting! I enjoy seeing what content these brands are putting out there. On the other hand, I think I’m a bit overseeing another 30-minute workout session.
I don’t know, it probably is just me or a handful of other people. I just do not get motivated when I’m watching someone doing it LIVE. Sort of doesn’t make sense because I have no problem working out with a pre-recorded workout on Obe or YouTube. Maybe it’s because I could actually hit pause and take a break for those ones? I’m not sure.
Another thing about that irks me about IG Live? When it’s someone with a smaller account hosting a Live, and you accidentally tap the icon to join. There’ll literally only 10 people in it, and your username is clearly displayed as “[insert username] joined the video.” CRINGE. Within that 0.5 seconds, you have to hit escape so fast, but the damage is done. The host already saw you entered the room and probably noticed the drop of viewers the moment you opted out. So awkward. It’s happened a handful of times, so I apologize now if I’ve been that person on your personal feed.
Now, I’m not saying that IG Live is necessarily horrible. It’s not at all. Do your thing. Make things live. But Instagram, can we work on making those lives somewhere else on the app? K, thanks!
