This week, the Golden Globes 2021 nominations were announced. Although I have yet to see most of the nominees, there was an overall consensus that this year’s nominees were a bit of a sham. I won’t dive into all of the nominees, but one nomination caught me (and many others) off-guard.
Emily in Paris received a nomination for best TV Series: Comedy, while Lily Collins got a nod for Best Actress, TV Series: Comedy.
*cue the silence*
Looked, I loved Emily in Paris as a great binge watch. I raved about the show to my friends and family as a must-see! The fashion! Lily Collins! PARIS?! All of it got my attention right off the bat. I even made a Reel about it.
Did it deserve a Golden Globe nom, though? That is not even up for debate. Please hold as I put my personal feelings for the show to the side. The series wasn’t groundbreaking. Hell, they didn’t even get any of the social media manager responsibilities correct. (Check out #MarketingTwitter and ask about it, I’m sure they’ll go off) I wasn’t in awe of the actual show’s storyline and the character development. I loved it as an easy-to-binge type of show.
One show that so many others can agree on that got a major snub is Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You on HBO. That show left me shaken, angry, intrigued, and jaw-dropped all in one episode. The fact this show didn’t receive a Golden Globe destroyed me.
How a show about a girl going after her career, finding love in random places, living “the life” as a social media manager (incorrectly might I add), gets a GOLDEN GLOBE nomination is beyond me.
There were so many more contenders to consider. I know every year at this point, nominations are more of a significant embarrassment and laugh. It makes you wonder, who is nominating these? Are you guys watching the same things we are? We were all at home last year, so we all binged so many shows and movies that you have a vast mass of loyal watchers who could have easily put together a well thought out ballot.
I’ll still tune into the Golden Globes, and all the awards show as it is one of my favorite times of the year but find me yelling at my TV screen about my opinions for different categories.
