I’ve said I would write about this for some time now, and here I am.
Driver’s License, Skin, Lie, Lie, Lie. Am I late for the show? Oh well.
Here’s a quick breakdown for anyone who is lost and just getting into the ~drama~ of it all.
Olivia Rodrigo stars in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (which I highly recommend!). In early in January, after subtly teasing it in the middle of 2020, fans noticed a minor change in the lyrics when she sings, “And you’re probably with that blonde girl.”
Big deal since that line used to be “that brunette girl.” That’s when all eyes turned to the next character in this triangle: Sabrina Carpenter.
Most notably known for her role as Maya in Boy Meet’s World spin-off, Girl Meets World. If you Google a quick photo of her, you’ll notice she’s blonde. Fans were quick to speculate Olivia was referring to Sabrina when they started seeing she was hanging out with the final character in this triangle: Joshua Basset.
Joshua stars alongside Olivia in HSMTMTS as her character’s love interest. Now, although they never confirmed it IRL (no one ever does), everyone assumed that Olivia and Joshua had some on-going chemistry off-camera. That is until Olivia posted this TikTok:
But then wait, just a few months later, why is Joshua hopping in on Sabrina’s TikTok’s?
And here we are in 2021 with three songs that happen to all be released simultaneously, leading everyone to create powerpoints and deep-dive into in-depth discussions on this relationship that no one knows about except the three involved. If you haven’t heard their songs yet, have at it below:
(Some people have gone far as to think that Sabrina Carpenter is the woman in this video. The FBI is real.)
Clearly, I’m invested. Only because I very much respect and love each of the people involved. As for who’s “side” I’m on, I’m team Switzerland over here. Until someone makes a bold statement about the feud, I’m going to sit back and listen to the theories.
Look, it’s their lives, and as with any celebrity or person with significant influence, there are different sides to each story. So I can say what I think but be wrong.
I love how this is being compared to the Lindsey Lohan, Aaron Carter, and Hilary Duff love triangle back in the 00s. That was my jam. But again, did anyone say anything– OK, SLIGHTLY. Lindsey did more damage, OK.
If you came here for a quick explanation, I hope this helps. If you’re ranking all of this based on who had the better songs, I’ve got my vote for Olivia, and I’m excited for all the other new music on the way. And, if this is your first time listening to Sabrina Carpenter, check out her second album! It’s worth the listen.
[…] song did too, leading to many speculations about the Camilla Cabello/Sabrina Carpenter/Shawn Mendes love triangle. I’m not picking sides here, but I will say Sabrina has such a way with […]
