Sabrina Carpenter could do no wrong in my book. Her latest album, Short n’ Sweet, was released in late August, and now that we’ve all had a chance to sit and put it on repeat about a million times, let’s talk about it, shall we?
Whatever Sabrina puts into her music, I want more of it. Times 100. I know I’m not the only one shouting from the rooftop about how addicting her songs are when you listen to her album. We all knew what a bop “Espresso” and “Please, Please, Please” was, but the question was, how was she going to top this?
She did it. Add memorable lyrics (she’s the queen of doing so), catchy melodies, and unforgettable music videos; she nailed this album.
A little backstory: I’ve been a fan of Sabrina in her early stages since she portrayed Maya Hart on the Boy Meets World spinoff show Girl Meets World. I loved her character and knew she was going to be big! She even released so much music before her claim to fame this year.
Her 2015 Eyes Wide Open is a clear Disney-fied album where she was just coming of age. As she matured and evolved as an artist, her music kept improving, allowing her to disassociate herself as a solely “Disney kid.” With Singular: Act I and Act II, her voice, much like Sabrina herself, matured into a whole different playing field.
Let’s just say Eyes Wide Open was much more bubbly pop, the type of music you’d hear on Radio Disney. Meanwhile, Short n’ Sweet shows no boundaries and would 100% not be on that radio station.
And then came her 2022 Emails I Can’t Send with the one song that got everyone kicking their feet and anticipating to hear every concert: Nonsense. You know the one! The one where she slyly and smartly makes up the ending of each song that rhymes or hilariously inconspicuous endings.
Now it’s 2024, and we’re gifted her sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet, with twelve non-skippable songs. Let’s get into the rankings.
I love a good R&B, and this track shows Sabrina’s range. Not only could she do a pop song well, but she also has depth to her voice! This song was kind of the awakening Sza recently had, too. It was giving a little “My Boo” by Ghost Town DJs.
Oh, sneaky, sneaky, Sabrina. She truly ate with this one, with the sexual innuendos sprinkled throughout. I can’t be the only one who dropped their jaw when you heard, “Come right on me, I mean camaraderie Said you’re not in my time zone, but you wanna be.” OK, SABRINA. Plus, this was such an obvious song dedicated to Barry Keoghan!
It has been one of my favorites ever since its release, with a fantastic music video accompanying the song. It’s such a clever statement to say, “You could date me, but don’t make me look bad because people already think we shouldn’t be together.”
Jenna and Sabrina are the duo I didn’t know we needed. The music video DELIVERED, but the song did too, leading to many speculations about the Camilla Cabello/Sabrina Carpenter/Shawn Mendes love triangle. I’m not picking sides here, but I will say Sabrina has such a way with words.
“Slim Pickins” was one of the songs she slowly released during some of her concerts before her album release. It gave major country vibes, which could be an excuse for Sabrina to collaborate with country singers. She has that twang in her voice that fits perfectly.
Again, Sabrina is at it with clever wordplay. In a song saying I’ll be your baby mama if you play your cards right, the song also nods to the movie Juno and the Greek goddess Juno. (Something I learned via Threads, ha!)
Sabrina knew what she was doing when she released this right before her Coachella set. I don’t care what anyone says. This was THE song of the summer. It was everywhere.
There’s something about this song about a guy you were romantically linked to who doesn’t meet you on the same page. They just, as Sabrina says, don’t wanna talk about it. It’s as if Sabrina’s the other girl in the relationship when, in reality, she wants to make it real.
With similar country vibes as “Slim Pickins,” “Coincidence” is a perfect follow-up to “Sharpest Tool” as she continues to tell of [insert whoever here, probably Shawn Mendes] that she’s getting the short end of the stick in this situationship. Surprise, surprise.
Dumb & Poetic is a nicely put “F- You” track for the person you thought was the best thing ever; however, you realize this person isn’t all that. Even though the person in question seems so great on the inside, Sabrina sees right through the bullshit. Yes, girl!
“Don’t Smile” wraps up the album so well as we literally follow the highs and lows of this (or even several) relationships Sabrina has been through. I love her twist on “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened,” making it more of a bittersweet, “Don’t you forget me” type of send-off. It basically twists such a hopeful and happy quote into something completely different!
This song hit me to the core and brought me back to all my childhood crushes where I longed for a dude. “If they like you, they’ll just lie to themselves,” like yes, Sabrina. I have done that in the past. How could guys do what they can and make us feel this way?!
Short n’ Sweet is now streaming wherever you listen to music.
