During this Shelter In Place, I’m finally catching up on all these tv shows that I’ve piled up. Next on my list: Batwoman on The CW.
I started writing my reaction for each episode, but by episode 8, I forgot. By then, I got tired of the repetitiveness. One moment Batwoman AKA Katy Kane (Ruby Rose) accepts her psycho sister, Beth Kane (Rachel Skarsten), another minute; she hates her. It’s a back-and-forth of feelings up until episode 15 (?).
I should mention, I’m not an expert at the DC world or any comic book world for that matter. I’m simply a person watching these series with brand new eyes with no knowledge of their origin stories. But as someone who watched Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, and Supergirl, Batwoman didn’t seem to fit in precisely the same.
I hate to describe it this way, but the show fits a very cookie-cutter CW storyline. The lead character seeks vengeance and one goal = fight their enemy and, of course, protect their precious city. (The Flash with Reverse-Flash, Arrow with all his demons, etc.) Maybe at this point, I’m immune to yet another similar storyline with nothing fresh.
I do like the idea of Batwoman going against her sister, and I enjoyed the storyline of her good sister from another earth stepping in. But once they SPOILER ALERT shot her, I was upset once again. We’re back with another sister versus sister fight—the same old story.
And as much as I love Ruby Rose, I’m not convinced by her acting. That’s so mean to say because yes, I cannot act for the life of me, but there’s something about it where I’m like, “C’mon Ruby. Give me more!!!” Does anyone else feel the same? I’m pulling for her, though, and it’s only the first season. Hell, Stephen Amell won me over only in about season 2 or 3, I don’t even remember anymore. (That, and because I stopped by season 4)
Will I keep watching? Yes. Will I be as excited as I am watching The Flash? Maybe not. But, for the sake of keeping up with each series storyline and staying true to my CW roots, I’m going to stick this one out.
